What to Say:

“Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I am a constituent from [Your City, State]. I’m calling to urge [Representative/Senator Last Name] to support the reintroduction of the LOCAL Foods Act, S.1212. This bipartisan bill helps small farmers by removing unnecessary federal barriers to on-farm meat processing, expanding consumer access to locally raised meat, and strengthening our local food supply chains. Please prioritize this important legislation.”

Why the LOCAL Foods Act Matters:
Since the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906, federal law has restricted how small producers can process animals—even when consumers have chosen to buy the animals themselves. While USDA’s 2018 updated guidance allowed for more flexibility, those rules still aren’t law—and they remain vulnerable to reversal.

The LOCAL Foods Act of 2025, S.1212, would:

  • Replace outdated FMIA language with clearer rules that match USDA guidance that respect people’s rights as owners of livestock, irrespective of whether they raised the animals
  • Allow farmers to designate agents to process livestock for consumers
  • Reduce pressure on overburdened slaughterhouses and lower transportation costs
  • Expand local meat access and farm viability
  • Strengthen supply chain resilience and food sovereignty
This is a unique opportunity to build on bipartisan Senate leadership and secure meaningful reform for small farmers across the country.
